Perth Charter House
Perth Charter House
Perth Charter House was a monastic house of Carthusian monks built in 1439. In 1559 much of the charter house was destroyed by protestant reformers. What was left of the establishment was given to Perth in 1569.
Unlike monks of other orders the Carthusians lived life as hermits, each occupying his own ‘cell’ (more like a small house) and they only ever came together in the church for worship. The monks would remain silent during a weekly three-hour exercise walk around the cloister and they were strictly vegetarian. They grew food in small individual gardens beside their ‘cells’.
