Blackfriars in Gloucester was founded in 1239 and is one of the most complete surviving Dominican friaries in England.
The monastery was known as Blackfriars due to the black cloaks worn by the friars. Following the dissolution of the monasteries the friary was converted into a private residence and a cap manufactory in 1545.
